we have a 4x4 expedition through Russia, and were wondering if we can get from Niznevartovsk to Tomsk by car, along the Obi river. On the map there are no roads, just swamp, and we don't want to go round.

Thank you all! I guess, only by ferry down the Obi river ..so, we have to change the route. Basically , the ideea was to try some real adventurous route from the Ural mountains to lake Baikal, really off the highway, getting a taste of the real siberian wilderness. That's why I imagined a road through Khanty-Masinsk, Surgut, Obi river to Yenisey river- Yeniseysk town. But I guess that's not doable... so, we would appreciate ideas for other itineraries in the region (they should be not loger than 8 days!!!!)

8 days is not enough for the 4х4 expedition from the Urals to Lake Baikal. You need 4 days to get from the Urals to Lake Baikal on the highway. But Russian highways are very interesting!

The most interesting and picturesque way to Baikal should be through Altai - Tyva - Sayan mountains, but this must be too far from your initial route and may take too much time as there's too much to see there. It should be not hard this year as it's too hot, and there's almost no water and/or mud, but anyway it should take too much even if you take a look at only the most common sights on this route.

Btw, when do you plan to come over?
